Let’s Talk Thai is the most modern, integrated course available for basic spoken Thai, using the Key-Word Method for rapid and effective learning. The kit comprises a book with audio CD packaged in a hard plastic travel case. You learn only what is needed by focusing on the 200 key words that cover around 60% of normal conversation. Pronunciation and usage guides quickly allow communication in sentences, statements and questions. The course also includes a full list of ‘adopted’ English words, pronunciation of common destinations with map, a two-way mini-dictionary and appendices. The pronunciation CD features male and female native Thai speakers. Authors are scientists applying results of recent language research. |

Detailed DescriptionThe Let’s Talk Thai travel kit consists of a handbook and audio CD, packaged together in a high quality Amaray case to withstand the stresses of travel. The handbook is saddle stitched for durability and printed on recycled paper. The audio CD in the Let’s Talk Thai language kit was professionally produced to exacting standards. Sound was recorded in the university language laboratory in Bangkok, with additional recording and the mastering being completed at professional recording studios in Australia. (Naturally, the traffic noise to illustrate Bangkok’s busy Chinatown district was indeed recorded on location at Chinatown in Bangkok.) To ensure highest quality, the CD is pressed, not computer-burnt, so will play on new or old-model CD players including all in-car players and all Walkman-type portables. |
Book Contents(with matching sections on the audio CD)1. Introduction (Course Format, Four Basic Rules) 2. Tones and Pronunciation When we speak, others must recognise our words. When we listen to others, we must recognise as many of their words as possible. Communication is difficult if our pronunciation is poor. Here you will practice the tones, vowels and consonants while learning some very useful words at the same time. 3. Politeness in Thailand Some words and particles used in Thai conversation are not part of the message. They are included just for politeness and to show respect. Effective and comfortable communication is unlikely without them. You are also more likely to get the response you want! 4. Easy Words – an instant vocabulary These are either English words now part of the Thai language or Thai words that sound like their English equivalents. You may be surprised how many English words you can include in conversations. 5. Making Simple Statements Using words you have already learned in previous sections, you will see how easy it is to make simple statements and questions. 6. Essential Words (Keywords) (Set A) This is the first set of key words you will often hear and use in conversations. You already know some of these words from earlier sections. Examples of how the words are used include brief sentences, statements and questions. 7. Simple Conversation Sentences in Thai are much simpler than in English. This does not limit communication at all, but definitely makes Thai easier to learn. 8. Numbers and Counting Count to one hundred in any language and you will notice the basic numbers being repeated. Simply learn the numbers zero to ten and the rest is easy, with only a few extra words to learn. 9. Essential Words (Keywords) (Set B) This is the second set of key words for Thai conversations, with examples of how they are used. Sometimes no example is needed, either because the word is used as a stand-alone exclamation, or it is more important for you to recognise it than use it. 10. More Simple Conversation Here is a more realistic conversation, also spoken a little faster than in Section 7. Two friends who know each other well are talking about their travels in Thailand. (People who do not know each other so well are generally more reserved and respectful than in this conversation.) 11. Common Place Names A selection of popular Thai destinations from the different regions are given in the book and pronounced in the audio program. Say the names so Thais will understand where you want to go. Appendices A. Hints for Learning Languages B. Telling the Time C. Days and Months D.
